About Our Shell
Ninety percent of the shell used in the crafting of our jewelry is made from very old 'mineralized' shell that has been laying at the bottom of Nantucket Sound in thirty feet of water. From our quahog dragger we fish for live quahogs to take to market. A variety of shells, stones and other hidden treasures come aboard with our regular catch. It is from this bounty that we select the shell that no longer has a living animal in it to be turned into the hand turned beads we create for our jewelry. Quahogs can live up to eighty years, and when they do live that long they often become very thick and sometimes quite broad as well. The process of mineralization occurs when sediments on the ocean floor become infused into the shell. Consequently, a unique translucency and strength occur as well. The red abalone shell beads are also made from very old shell harvested in the 1930s off the coast of northern California and Oregon.
